Peer-to-peer marketplace
Deposits & Liability
How we protect the owner and what liability the renter takes on during each rental.
How it works
Rentologo is a peer-to-peer rental marketplace. We are not an insurance company or underwriter. At checkout on a community listing, the renter authorizes a pre-authorization hold on their card for the security deposit amount. The amount is not charged: it is temporarily frozen by the renter's bank and released automatically 5 days after the rental ends in good condition.
Note about your card: To comply with bank authorization windows (~7 days), the temporary hold is placed at the time of booking, or 6 days before the rental start for reservations made further in advance. The release is processed automatically 5 days after the rental ends.
If the renter's card doesn't have sufficient funds or limit for the rental plus the hold, the transaction is declined and the reservation is canceled.
Security deposit tiers
The hold amount is calculated from the declared replacement value of the gear, per item. If the cart includes multiple items, the total hold is the sum of the hold for each line item, capped at a maximum of $500 per complete reservation.
Declared value
$1 – $200
Declared value
$201 – $1,000
Declared value
$1,001 – $2,500
Declared value
$2,501 and up
Examples: a $180 camera → $180 hold. An $800 lens → $200 hold. A $2,000 kit → $350 hold. A $12,000 cinema camera → $500 hold (maximum cap per reservation).
Renter liability
The hold is a temporary reservation of funds and does NOT limit the renter's financial liability. By accepting the terms at checkout, the renter takes full responsibility for the gear to the owner for the duration of the rental.
- If the gear suffers damage, theft, or loss valued at or below the hold, the corresponding amount is captured directly from the hold and the remainder is released.
- If the value of the damage, theft, or loss exceeds the hold, the renter is 100% responsible for paying the full cost of repair or replacement to the owner, even beyond the amount frozen on the card.
- Negligence, intentional misuse, use outside what's described in the listing, or leaving the gear unattended in public places void any consideration in the renter's favor.
Incident process
Report 0–24h
Report the incident via internal message to the owner and to support (contact). Upload photos and, if applicable, a police report.
Review 1–3 days
Rentologo reviews evidence, messages, and the rental record.
Resolution 3–10 days
The agreed amount is captured from the hold on the renter's card, and the rest is released. If the value exceeds the hold, the renter must cover the difference directly to the owner.
Rentologo reserves the right to investigate any reported incident and to determine, at its sole discretion, the extent to which the renter is liable for the incident amount.
Rentologo is not an insurer
This document describes a marketplace contractual framework, not an insurance policy. For high-value productions we recommend obtaining a dedicated policy from providers like Athos, Front Row, or The Film Emporium.
